Fuel prices in Morocco have taken a downward turn, with diesel prices dropping below MAD 13 per liter. This recent development is a result of declining international oil prices, which have eased pressure on the domestic market. The average price of diesel has fallen by nearly MAD 0.96 per liter, bringing it to approximately MAD 12.61 per liter, down from around MAD 13.55. Gasoline prices have also seen a reduction, with an average decrease of MAD 0.45 per liter, leaving gasoline selling at roughly MAD 13.84 per liter. These price cuts follow an earlier reduction introduced on June 16, when diesel prices were lowered by about MAD 0.40 per liter and gasoline by MAD 0.60 per liter.
The latest decrease comes after international crude oil prices retreated in recent weeks, particularly following a de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Lower global oil prices have reduced import costs for fuel distributors, allowing them to pass part of the savings on to consumers. This trend is a significant relief for Moroccan citizens, who have been facing rising fuel costs in the past year. The Moroccan government is also taking proactive measures to mitigate international energy pressure. By accelerating oil and gas exploration alongside its renewable energy strategy, the government aims to diversify the country's energy sources and reduce reliance on imports.
Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, announced that around 10 companies are currently exploring for hydrocarbons across Morocco, including Moroccan investors participating in the sector for the first time. Exploration activities are being conducted under 53 licenses and permits, including 40 offshore licenses, nine onshore licenses, and four exploitation concessions, covering several regions of the country. Recent exploration campaigns have resulted in natural gas discoveries in the Gharb Basin, Essaouira, Tendrara, and offshore Larache. While these finds are encouraging, Benali acknowledged that they have yet to reach the scale required to make Morocco a major hydrocarbon producer.
